About Course

English I is the foundation course of the Rapid Grad Academy high school English sequence. It teaches reading and writing as procedures you can learn and practise, not as talents you either have or lack.

The course runs on one repeated method: notice something specific in a text, name the technique, explain its effect, then use that technique in your own writing.

What you will study

  • Unit 1 — How Reading Actually Works: close reading, annotation, drawing inferences from evidence, and the difference between plot, topic and theme.
  • Unit 2 — The Short Story: plot and conflict, characterisation, setting and mood, point of view, symbol and irony.
  • Unit 3 — Poetry: line breaks and form, imagery and figurative language, rhythm and sound, and a four-pass method for reading any unfamiliar poem.
  • Unit 4 — The Sentence Toolkit: sentence types, fixing fragments and comma splices, punctuation as pacing, and precise word choice.
  • Unit 5 — Writing the Analytical Essay: building an arguable thesis, structuring body paragraphs, integrating quotations, and genuine revision.
  • Unit 6 — Drama, the Novel and Real-World Text: subtext and dramatic technique, reading Shakespeare, tracking development across a novel, and evaluating real arguments.

How the course works

Most of your time is spent on teaching lessons — explanations, worked examples and model analysis. Interactive activities let you practise on screen, typing your answers directly into the worksheet, and short quizzes check your understanding automatically. A mid-course assessment follows Unit 3 and a final assessment closes the course. Nothing needs to be printed or uploaded.

By the end you will be able to read a text closely and defend an interpretation with evidence, state a theme as an arguable claim, control your own sentences deliberately, write a structured analytical essay with properly integrated quotations, and evaluate any argument you meet for what it assumes and who it benefits.

Unit 1: How Reading Actually Works
<h2>Unit Introduction</h2> <p>You have been reading for years. So why does a course need to teach you how to read?</p> <p>Because there are two different activities that both get called "reading." The first is <em>reading for information</em> — scanning a text to find out what happens. You do this with a news article, a text message, a set of instructions. The second is <em>reading for meaning</em> — paying attention to how a text is built, and what that construction tells you beyond the surface events.</p> <p>Most students only ever practise the first. This unit teaches the second.</p> <h2>Unit Learning Objectives</h2> <p>By the end of Unit 1, you will be able to: - Explain the difference between reading for plot and reading for meaning - Annotate a text using a consistent, purposeful system - Draw valid inferences and distinguish them from unsupported guesses - Separate a text's topic from its theme, and state a theme as a full sentence</p> <hr />

Unit 2: The Short Story
<h2>Unit Introduction</h2> <p>The short story is the most useful form for learning how fiction works, because nothing in it is wasted. A novelist can afford a slow chapter. A short story writer cannot afford a slow paragraph. Every element is doing visible work, which makes the machinery easy to see once you know what to look for.</p> <p>This unit takes fiction apart into five components — plot, character, setting, point of view, and symbol — and examines each in isolation before putting them back together. By the end you will be able to read a story and describe not just what it means but <em>how it produces</em> that meaning.</p> <h2>Unit Learning Objectives</h2> <p>By the end of Unit 2, you will be able to: - Map a story's plot structure and identify its central conflict type - Analyse characterisation through direct and indirect methods - Explain how setting creates mood and shapes meaning - Identify point of view and analyse its effect on reader knowledge and sympathy - Distinguish symbol from motif, and recognise the three main forms of irony</p> <hr />

Unit 3: Poetry
<h2>Unit Introduction</h2> <p>Students dread poetry more than any other part of English, and the reason is usually a bad early experience — being asked what a poem "really means," as though the poet had hidden a message and the student had failed to find it.</p> <p>That framing is wrong. A poem is not a riddle with one answer. It is a piece of language built to produce a specific effect, and like any built thing, you can examine how it was made.</p> <p>The one genuine difference with poetry is <strong>compression</strong>. A short story has thousands of words to establish mood, character, and idea. A poem may have forty. Every word therefore carries more weight, which means poetry rewards close reading more than any other form — and the close reading tools from Unit 1 work here directly.</p> <h2>Unit Learning Objectives</h2> <p>By the end of Unit 3, you will be able to: - Explain how line breaks, stanzas, and form contribute to meaning - Identify and analyse imagery and the major figurative devices - Recognise rhythm, rhyme scheme, and sound devices, and explain their effects - Apply a systematic four-pass method to read any unfamiliar poem</p> <hr />

Unit 4: The Sentence Toolkit
<h2>Unit Introduction</h2> <p>This unit is about grammar, and it is worth explaining why it comes here rather than at the start.</p> <p>Grammar taught in isolation doesn't stick. Students learn to label a subordinate clause on a worksheet on Tuesday and write a comma splice on Thursday, because labelling and writing are different skills. So this unit treats grammar the way the rest of the course treats literary technique: as a set of <strong>choices with effects</strong>.</p> <p>You will learn the four sentence types not so you can name them, but because varying them is the single fastest way to improve how your writing sounds. You will learn to fix comma splices not because they are forbidden, but because they make a reader stumble. Every rule here has a reason, and the reason is always the reader.</p> <h2>Unit Learning Objectives</h2> <p>By the end of Unit 4, you will be able to: - Construct and deliberately vary all four sentence types - Identify and correct fragments, run-ons, and comma splices in your own writing - Use punctuation to control pace, emphasis, and clarity - Select vocabulary appropriate to audience, purpose, and register</p> <hr />

Unit 5: Writing the Analytical Essay
<h2>Unit Introduction</h2> <p>Everything so far has been preparation for this unit.</p> <p>You can read closely (Unit 1). You know how fiction and poetry are constructed (Units 2–3). You can control a sentence (Unit 4). This unit teaches you to assemble those capabilities into a single sustained argument.</p> <p>The core insight of this unit: <strong>an analytical essay is not a report on a text. It is an argument about a text.</strong> A report tells the reader what is there. An argument tells the reader something they might disagree with, and then makes them agree.</p> <p>If your essay could not possibly be argued with, you have written a summary.</p> <h2>Unit Learning Objectives</h2> <p>By the end of Unit 5, you will be able to: - Move from observation to a specific, arguable thesis - Build body paragraphs using the evidence-commentary structure - Integrate and cite quotations correctly and fluently - Write introductions and conclusions that do real work - Revise at the structural level, not just the proofreading level</p> <hr />

Unit 6: Drama, the Novel and Real-World Text
<h2>Unit Introduction</h2> <p>Everything you have analysed so far has been short. A short story can be reread in twenty minutes; a poem in two.</p> <p>Extended texts are different in kind, not just in length. You cannot hold a novel in your head at once. Patterns develop across hundreds of pages, and the technique that opens a play may not pay off until the final act. This unit teaches you to track development across distance.</p> <p>It closes with non-fiction, because the analytical skills you have built are not confined to literature. The ability to identify an argument, evaluate its evidence, and recognise how language is being used to persuade you is the most directly practical thing this course teaches.</p> <h2>Unit Learning Objectives</h2> <p>By the end of Unit 6, you will be able to: - Analyse dramatic structure, dialogue, and stage direction - Read Shakespearean language with confidence using decoding strategies - Track character, motif, and theme development across a full novel - Evaluate non-fiction argument for structure, evidence, and rhetorical technique</p> <hr />
